About Fawohoma

Fawohoma Initiative is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the capacity of Ghanaian youth to thrive in the world by fostering a strong culture of literacy and education. The name "Fawohoma" originates from the Twi phrase "fa wo ho ma" meaning "pick up your book and read"—words that our President's late father frequently used to encourage his children to read.

His vision for the transformative power of books and education is the cornerstone of our organization's efforts. Fawohoma Initiative exists to advance literacy and educational opportunities for underserved youth in Ghana, fostering lifelong learning, leadership, and community development through inclusive and innovative programs

Fawohoma Initiative

To cultivate a generation of empowered, literate youth in Ghana who can lead transformative change through equitable access to quality education.

Fawohoma Initiative exists to advance literacy and educational opportunities for underserved youth in Ghana, fostering lifelong learning, leadership, and community development through inclusive and innovative programs.

Founded in 2024 by Ghanaians in the diaspora, the Fawohoma Initiative is a Delaware-based NGO committed to driving social and economic progress across Ghana. Our core belief is that literacy is the foundation of empowerment. By investing in education, we unlock the potential of young people to become informed citizens, creative thinkers, and resilient leaders. In memory of the late Boateng, we are launching a new initiative in Obo-Kwahu to establish a Kindergarten classroom block that prioritizes literacy, reading comprehension, and al education. We are also implementing the Obo Community Library ICT initiative which includes ICT resources to complement learning and prepare youth for the digital demands of modern education.
📚 Rationale
In Ghana, many children face barriers to basic literacy and quality education. This initiative responds to the urgent need to improve reading and learning outcomes, especially in underserved communities. By creating inclusive learning environments, we aim to nurture a culture of reading, critical thinking, and academic curiosity that will ripple through families and communities.

We aim to promote literacy by providing access to books, reading programs, scholarship schemes, and trained facilitators to improve literacy rates among children and youth. At the same time, we strengthen foundational education by supporting core subjects like reading, writing, and numeracy through interactive and culturally relevant curricula. To bridge educational gaps, we offer after-school programs, tutoring, and mentorship to help students catch up and excel. We also integrate ICT thoughtfully, using technology to enhance—not replace—traditional learning, ensuring digital tools support literacy and educational goals. Finally, we foster youth leadership by encouraging civic engagement and leadership through education-focused clubs and community service projects.

Our Strategy

We engage communities to understand their unique educational challenges so programs can be tailored to their real needs. From there, we focus on developing learning centers that are well-equipped with books, materials, and basic ICT tools to create welcoming spaces for growth. Teachers and facilitators are given the training and support they need to confidently deliver literacy-focused lessons that truly reach their students. Our curricula are designed to be engaging, age-appropriate, and rooted in local culture and language, making learning more relatable. To keep improving, we continuously monitor progress, track literacy outcomes, and use what we learn to make programs even stronger.

We believe in community ownership, involving parents, educators, and local leaders in managing and sustaining the centers so that they truly belong to the people they serve. To keep programs running, we support income-generating activities such as adult literacy classes and paid workshops that help cover operational costs. Strong partnerships with schools, libraries, and NGOs allow us to expand our reach and share resources more effectively. At the same time, we actively engage both local and diaspora volunteers to mentor, teach, and support learners, creating a strong network of shared responsibility and impact.
